A Look Back: OM 5-1 La Corogne

The year is 2005. OM must win the Intertoto Cup in order to play in the Europa Ligue during the 2005-2006 season. Their opponent: Deportivo de La Coruña. After suffering a 2-0 defeat in Spain, OM returns to a final leg at le Vélodrome, on the brink of a tournament exit. What happened that night will forever be etched in recent history.

The game starts quickly with a 1-1 scoreline and two red cards. This game was one of my earliest memories as an OM fan. The game displayed not only an incredible comeback, but a powerful bond between the fans and the players. It is this bond that makes OM special. Through the highlights, you can feel the supporters pushing the team forward, the electricity in the stadium. All of this culminates into a crescendo as the goals go in. With each goal, strangers in the crowd are suddenly in each other’s arms, celebrating in unison. It is moments like these that make sport special, a true unifier around the world.

Whether you are an OM fan, soccer fan, or just curious about the city, this is a moment to watch. Check out the video below to see what I mean.
