Everyone knew this would be a tough game. Caen has played remarkably well this season, especially in defense. OM has always struggled to maintain form and had already lost to Caen early in the season. However, today, despite a red card, OM (specifically Mandanda) resisted Caen the whole night and came out with an unlikely win.
Despite the win, OM should be concerned after this game. Within each phase of the team, the unit was carried by one figure, while the rest struggled.
Steve Mandanda was perfect tonight. One of the strongest performances in his career. He kept out several powerful shots throughout the game, and stopped penalties in the shootout. Absolute dominance from the captain, who is linked to a move away from the club this winter. Manquillo had another solid game, nothing spectacular but not bad either. Nkoulou was also consistent. Rekik had a tough game, but was not poor until the red card that sent him back to the locker room. Mendy also struggled, losing possession and struggling with tackles. The left back continues to add to a disturbing series of poor games.
Lassana Diarra yet again led the midfield with a tenacious and dominant display, offensively and defensively. Isla, lined up higher in the midfield, played reasonably well, being involved in a couple chances. Barrada had a terrible game, where it seemed many of his passes just would not connect. Symbolized by his corner kick that hit a defender 10 meters away. Silva also really struggled in all phases of the game. He simply looks slow, weak, and not technical enough to make an impact. To think his guy plays for Real Madrid? Ocampos was tough to watch. Everything he attempted went awry. He yet again danced into trouble and lost the ball constantly, and is showing his age when it comes to decision-making. Hopefully, he can improve.
Amazing volley by Diarra in the first half.
Ocampos was tough to watch. Everything he attempted went awry. He yet again danced into trouble and lost the ball constantly, and is showing his age when it comes to decision-making. Hopefully, he can improve. Batshuayi looked tired, and struggled to make anything happen. He seemed, isolated up top which makes sense given the weak support he has. Without Nkoudou, Cabella, and Alessandrini, the defense can press higher and prevent Michy from getting near goal, where he is deadly.
Mandanda – 10/10
Manquillo – 5.5/10
Nkoulou – 6/10
Rekik – 3/10
Mendy – 3/10
Diarra – 7/10
Isla – 6/10
Silva – 3/10
Barrada – 3/10
Ocampos – 3/10
Batshuayi – 3.5/10
Merci, et Allez l’OM !
