A Look Back: Lyon 5-5 OM

During OM’s title-winning 2009-10 season, one of the most incredible games in Ligue 1 history took place in November. Lyon and OM, battling it out for the Ligue title, met at the Stade Gerland for what would be an absolute insane game. The game flow was incredible: Ten goals scored, 4 equalizing goals, and 5 goals scored in the last fifteen minutes of the game. This Olympico would forever go down as a classic of French Football. Analysis/video highlights below.

The lineups for both teams were loaded with stars. For Marseille: Steve Mandanda, Souleymane Diawara, Gabriel Heinze, Benoit Cheyrou, Mamadou Niang, and Mathieu Valbuena were some of the big names. For Lyon: Lisandro Lopez, Kim Kallstrom, Sydney Govou, Miralem Pjanić, Michel Bastos and Hugo Lloris were the big names at the time. With both teams playing in Champions League at the time, the game was destined to be a shocker.

The storyline for the game is worthy of a classic sports movie. The first half saw Lyon score first with Pjanić in the 3rd minute. After a Diawara equalizer ten minutes later, Govou put Lyon ahead yet again. As the half winded down, Cheyrou blasted a knuckling shot that Lloris accidentally turned into his own net. The first half finished 2-2.

The second half opened with a goal from Bakary Koné to give OM a 3-2 lead. When Brandao scored in the 79th minute to give OM a 4-2 lead with 11 minutes left, the game seemed to be just about done. Even with Lyon’s scoring talent, it seemed unlikely for Lyon to score 3 goals with such little time left. Unlikely, but not impossible.

Lisandro had a great finish in the 81st minute to put the game at 4-3. Then, two minutes later, Lyon is awarded a penalty, which is put away by Lisandro. The game is at 4-4, with 3 goals scored in the last 5 minutes. To seemingly complete the nightmare for les Marseillais, Michel Bastos scores on a counter to put Lyon up 5-4 in the 90th minute. With the last gasp of an attack, OM gets a throw-in deep in Lyon territory in the 92nd minute. Laurent Bonnart throws the ball in, which rebounds before being crossed in by Heinze. In the scrum for the ball, Mbia or Toulalan collide and the rebound goes into the net, the game finishing 5-5. To prove that this is is not a made-up story, the highlights are below. Enjoy the show, et allez l’OM !
