After a difficult first half, OM looked like it was on its way to another disappointing result. However, good spells of possession and two excellent goals in the second half allowed OM to coast to an important victory. As the team moves forward without Bafetimbi Gomis (16 goals this season), goals will be high on the priority list. With today’s performance, les Marseillais are on the right track. We must be Patient with Payet
The 30 Million Euro man is still finding his legs. Dimitri Payet showed moments of greatness today, but failed to finish chances and get more involved. It is evident that more time will be needed for him to find the rhythm that he is known for. He was able to get more involved in the attack, hit the crossbar and forced a great save from Costil. After that, he sent several shots into the stands, and didn’t seem to be physically ready. With steady progression each game, I feel that Payet will gather momentum in time for next season.
Thauvin Answers his Critics
Florian Thauvin, after a recent spell of average performances, offered the perfect response against Rennes. He had several plays where he created separation in the Rennes defense, showing off technical skill and speed. He provided many passes to supporting teammates, instead of opting to dribble every play. His big moment came in the 64th moment. After receiving a back heel from Sanson, Thauvin curled the ball inside the post from 26 yards out. This goal, putting OM up 2-0, killed the game. With the PSG game next week, Thauvin will need to recreate his performance from today if OM is to have a chance against les Parisiens.
Sertic and Zambo Step Up
Without Fanni and Sakai, the right side of the defense was a big question mark for this game. With recent arrival Sertic and Zambo starting today, many were concerned about whether they would be up to the task. Simply put, Sertic and Zambo were excellent. Aside from a few lapses and mistakes, both players displayed serenity and solidity throughout the game. While the Rennes opposition did not provide much of an offensive threat, this was an important test to determine whether Sertic could be replied upon in defense. The big question will be whether to include him or Fanni against Paris. While I find Fanni the safer option, Sertic has good instincts and is physically better able to match up with Paris’ speed. Garcia will have a big decision to make.
